The Plant Molecular Virology Lab. of Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV) works mainly with viruses from the genera Begomovirus (family Geminiviridae) and Potyvirus (family Potyviridae). These viruses include some of the most economically important pathogens of field, vegetable and fruit crops in tropical and subtropical regions througout the world. The lab carries out research which aims at: (i) the biological and molecular characterization of begomoviruses and potyviruses, (ii) the development of efficient diagnostic methods, using molecular techniques such as hybridization and PCR or serological techniques, and (iii) the control of the diseases caused by begomoviruses and potyviruses, using pathogen-derived resistance. We gather a fairly large group of graduate students in Plant Pathology and Genetics as well as Agronomy, Biochemistry and Biological Sciences major undergraduates, under the supervision of two faculty members from the Dep. of Plant Pathology of UFV. The lab is located in building of the Institute for Agricultural Biotechnoloy (BIOAGRO), and has an area of approximately 120 m2.
